Amazon’s Irish Data Centers to Power Back-Up Generators with HVO Fuel

Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of the world’s largest online retailer Amazon, provide on-demand cloud computing platforms and APIs to individuals, companies and governments. Such large-scale operations require high-powered data centres, of which the company have several in Ireland.

Such large-scale operations in cloud computing require a significant source of power, and in an effort to significantly reduce carbon emissions, Amazon Web Services (AWS) have started to transition all back-up generators at existing Irish Data Centres from diesel to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), partnering with Certa Ireland to do so.

AWS currently have 10 data centres in Dublin and its surrounding area, with plans to expand to Co. Louth and Co. Meath in the near future.

The partnership between Certa and Amazon Web Services is the first of its kind for AWS, as they are trialling HVO in Ireland as part of a wider rollout across Europe.

“To join AWS at the beginning of such an important journey for them is an exciting prospect for us. This is a mutually beneficial partnership for both parties.

AWS are adopting a product that will immediately and seamlessly bring them closer to their long-term sustainability goals, and Certa are being presented with the opportunity to earn the trust of such a formidable name in the industry, hopefully inspiring others to embrace the same change with more comfort, allowing us to be the leaders of change that we strive to be for a more sustainable future.”

“Transitioning to HVO is just one of the many ways we’re improving the sustainability of our data centres, decarbonising our operations, and working towards Amazon’s company-wide goal to meet net-zero carbon by 2040, 10 years in advance of the Paris Agreement,” said Neil Morris, director of infrastructure operations for AWS in northern Europe.
