Constructing Change: SISK's Switch to HVO

What if the biggest step toward sustainability… didn’t require a single step for your machinery at all?

That’s exactly what happened when John Sisk & Son, one of Ireland’s largest and most respected construction companies, who fully switched to HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) — a cleaner, renewable alternative to diesel and gas oil, over 3 years ago.

They didn’t pause a project.
They didn’t retrofit a single machine.
And they didn’t second-guess it.

What they did do was cut carbon emissions by up to 90%.
That’s not a future promise — that’s right now.

It started with a question:

“Is there a way to reduce our environmental impact without disrupting operations?”

They got their answer from Certa.

We continue to supply HVO to Sisk across all sites — and the results speak for themselves:

✅ Cleaner burn, fewer emissions
✅ Drop-in replacement — no engine modifications
✅ Same performance, same power, drastically less carbon

But don’t just take our word for it:

We spoke directly with SISK’s Energy Manager, Ian O’ Connor when the company was officially launching their initiative to replace Gas Oil with HVO. In this interview, Ian said:

“We started trialling HVO a number of years ago. The trials have gone excellently on sites and it’s part of our 2030 sustainability roadmap where we have set out a number of ambitious targets to become more sustainable with the ultimate aim of being net-zero by 2030.

Gas Oil accounts for 41% of our operational emissions, and by using HVO as an alternative, we’re going to reduce those 41% emissions by 37%. It’s a big step forward in realizing our ambitions for 2030.

We have mandated the use of HVO across our sites in both Ireland and the UK, so we will be using HVO exclusively in our generators and our plant, which will offset 37% of the company’s CO2 emissions.”

Switching to HVO is simple, and we’re here to guide you every step of the way. Whether you need bulk supply, storage solutions, or expert advice, our team is ready to help.
