Home maintenance tips for saving time and money this spring

Home maintenance isn’t just something you should do when you know your in-laws are about to pop round. Keeping on top of your home and investing some time into its care and upkeep can help you prolong the life of appliances, fixtures, and fittings, and also help to maintain your property’s value should you ever come to sell it.

You don’t have to spend a fortune on it though – here are some easy home maintenance tips for saving time and money this spring.

Clear out filters

Filters can become clogged with dust and grime, and when this happens, they stop working or break altogether. You should clean out your filters in your appliances regularly (at least once per quarter or  based on manufacturer’s guidelines for appliances) to keep them in good working order, including your hoover and the bathroom and kitchen extraction fans.

Preventative maintenance

Prevention is better than cure as they say, and not only can it spot problems before they have developed, but it could also cost you less in the long run. One of the appliances you should have serviced regularly is your boiler. Not only will this keep it in good working order and prevent costly breakdowns, but boiler services keep your appliance safe too. Your boiler is an essential part of your home heating system, and can be very costly to replace, so in this case prevention really is better than cure.

Clean gutters

Clearing your gutters from leaves, moss and other debris will ensure they can effectively work to drain water away from your property – leaving water to build up around these areas can lead to damp and mould on the inside of your home and can camouflage serious issues with your property that need to be addressed.

Repaint and waterproof your shed

Your garden shed is a great storage space in your garden, but it does need a bit of upkeep to ensure the contents stay safe and protected. Repainting your shed will help to seal any small cracks and prevent the wood from rotting, and ensuring the roof is watertight with new felt will save you from having to replace the whole shed sooner than you want to.

Get your lawnmower blades sharpened

Making mowing the grass less of a chore by having the blades sharpened. They can quickly become dull and this means you’ll have to work twice as hard to get the job done.

Repair window seals and cracks

Cut down on draughts and improve the comfort level at home by sealing up draughts and cracks under windowsills. A few minutes with a caulk gun is all you’ll need to instantly improve the insulation in your home, and this will help you save money on your home heating oil spend in future as you’ll need less of it to heat your rooms comfortably.

Switch your ceiling fan blade direction

If you have a ceiling fan and the blades are in the wrong direction, you’ll be forcing warm air from the ceiling down into your room, when you want the opposite effect! Many people forget to change their blade direction throughout the year, but this simple task will make your home much more energy efficient.
