Why is oil heating better than gas?

When it comes to heating your home, you have options in terms of the fuel type you choose. Whilst there are a lot of renewable energy options slowly coming to the fore, for most people the main choices are still between gas and home heating oil.

While gas has its benefits, we still think home heating oil is the clear winner, and if you need convincing, here are just a few reasons why home heating oil is better than gas.

You control how much you need and use

Your oil tank stores whatever amount of home heating oil you need, and for as long as you need it. Once you buy it and have it safely stored on your property, you can control how much you use, making it easier to budget and plan ahead for your energy usage and spend.

In the cold months when gas supplies may be disrupted due to poor weather or when the gas supply is switched off for servicing, maintenance or repair, you can rest assured that as an oil customer you’ll never be without it when you need it most.

As oil tanks comes in various sizes and capacities you can also choose the most appropriate one for your home size, making it a very flexible option.

For rural areas, it may be the only option

If you live outside of the gas network, home heating oil might be your only option as the gas network is limited to within certain city radiuses. Even if you live in a city or the suburbs of a large town, oil is still a very popular option when gas alternatives are available.

Heating systems cheaper to run over the long term

Typically, a new boiler and installation can cost between €2000 – €3000 – so it is a sizeable investment in your home where you would expect to see long term savings. The good news is that an oil-fired central heating system typically lasts for longer than the gas equivalent, so while it might be initially more expensive, over the long term you’ll see better savings.

You can also add a bottle of home heating oil additives to your oil tank before a delivery, and this can help to improve the overall health of your heating system, by reducing sludge build up and improving the efficiency of your boiler.

You can choose the best type of home heating oil for you

Despite what you might have heard, there are various types of home heating oil available, meaning you can choose the exact type that you need. Kerosene is the most popular type of domestic heating oil, whereas Gas Oil (also known as green diesel) is used for businesses and non-road vehicles, as well as some homes.

We also provide a premium kerosene product specifically for range cookers which provides a cleaner burn for your range.
