Why should I service my boiler?

Taking regular care of your home heating oil boiler is more important than you may realise and should most certainly never be overlooked. Here we address the 5 reasons why you should service your boiler this autumn and what happens if you don’t.

1. Keep you and your family warm this winter

Having a reliable and dependable boiler to provide hot water and heat is a daily essential. Your boiler plays a vital part in keeping your family life running smoothly by providing a warm home and hot showers, so you need to rely on your boiler all year round. A reliable boiler will see you through the winter, and that’s when you really depend on its proficiency.

It’s a good idea to schedule your boiler service at the start of autumn when you find yourself turning the heating on more often.

2. Keep your boiler safe

Like many other things, your boiler needs to be regularly checked and tested to make sure all it is working correctly and safely. Just like an annual car service, an annual boiler service can prevent potential problems, avoid unwanted disruption, ensure maximum central heating efficiency and keep energy bills to a minimum.

3. Cheaper than replacing your boiler

Regular maintenance and checks of your boiler can detect whether something is wrong or stop any issues from getting worse. In discovering whether a fault needs to be rectified, a qualified engineer can carry out the work competently to prevent future disruptions. A regularly maintained boiler will more than likely last much longer than one that has not been serviced which saves you money on replacing with a new boiler.

4. Save on your energy bills

An annual boiler service can ensure that maximum efficiency is achieved as well as detecting defects or faults. A boiler that isn’t working to its capacity can hugely impact on your energy bills. Your boiler becomes less energy efficient with age but with regular servicing this process could be slowed down. Your service engineer will inspect and test all the boiler parts and replace any that are no longer functioning correctly to ensure that your boiler is running as efficiently as possible. The more energy efficient your boiler is, the more money you could save over time.

5. Save your life!

If your boiler is incorrectly installed, poorly maintained, or not regularly serviced, it can produce carbon monoxide gas. Gas leaks can be extremely dangerous or even fatal. Carbon monoxide poisoning can cause symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, breathlessness (these can often be easily mistaken for other common sicknesses), collapsing and a loss of consciousness.

A regular service will give you peace of mind that you’re safe or highlight the need for repairs before an inefficient boiler causes any serious damage to your health. It is recommended that you have a carbon monoxide alarm fitted in your home as this harmful gas has no taste, smell or colour. These detectors can be purchased from most DIY stores.
