CRICKET IRELAND
Cricket Ireland has been #BackingGreen on the field for 100 years this year. Now after 100 years of backing international and club teams across Ireland, the union is taking the green approach to powering international cricket matches in 2023 with Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO).
On July 28th 2023, the top-ranked women’s cricket team in the world, Australia were welcomed to Clontarf Cricket Club in Dublin for a test series with the Irish Women’s Team.
Not only was this series memorable for the closely-fought competition before Team Australia pulled away to claim victory in Clontarf, it was also the first cricket match in Ireland to power off-field activities with HVO fuel.
To date, Cricket Ireland has fuelled events including kids zones, food trucks, inflatables, and public amenities with diesel generators. Having partnered with Certa in 2023 to back Irish cricket, the decision was made to back green by switching away from regular diesel generators to the low-carbon diesel alternative – HVO.
An exciting solution at the forefront of sustainable energy, HVO is a low-emission diesel alternative fuel. HVO has been demonstrated to significantly reduce fuel-related carbon emissions with no modification required for existing diesel engines or generators.
Cricket Ireland has announced the rolling out of HVO fuel in its’ generators for all upcoming international cricket matches and test series including the much anticipated men’s T20I series against world no.1 India in August held at Malahide Cricket Grounds, Dublin.
"Traditionally at matches and events, we've used diesel generators to power food trucks and our inflatables and kids' zones. This year we've made the switch to HVO which has been a really easy, direct swap from diesel.
We have quite a few big cricket events in the calendar with an India series coming up, and our partnership with Certa just made it so much easier to think about sustainability and make the switch."Elaine Nolan, Participation Director, Cricket Ireland
Cricket Ireland become the latest of Ireland’s sporting and cultural organisations to power events using HVO and benefit from the carbon emissions reduction of up to 90% when compared to using diesel. Since 2022, events from The National Ploughing Championships, Electric Picnic, Irish Open Golf, as well as the Summer Series of concerts at Malahide Castle in July 2023.
